The PSC’s decision is a compromise to AT&T’s request that it no longer delivere the phone booksto customers. AT&T Florida told the PSC that eliminatingt the automatic distribution of the residentiaol white pagesis “an environmentallh green endeavor and a cost savingv measure” and that providing a paper copy of the directoryg is “an inefficient use of resources in thesre touch economic times.” But commissioners also were worriexd about how it mighgt impact customers’ ability to acceses information, said PSC Spokeswoman Kirstehn Olsen.
Instead of doing away with the rule commissioners agreed to give it a trial run, during which time it will gathefr customer feedback. “Today’s decision allows the PSC to assess the practicalitg of discontinuing printed residential directory while continuing to provide directories to customers who wanta copy,” PSC Chairmann Matthew M. Carter II said in a news As part ofthe agreement, AT&gT must put a toll-free number on the cover of the Yellowq Pages that directs people to call if they want a Whitd Pages. The directory will still be provided for free to thoswe whorequest it.
AT&f Florida would not disclose just how much money the waiver will save, citing confidentiality, according to its requestr to the PSC. AT&Tr Florida already has begun a program to provide its Yellow Pages and residential listingson CD-ROM in certain arease of Florida.
